CD covers

Other bands have very strong images. The white stripes are recognised for their colour theme of white ,black and red which is carried on through everything they do from what they wear in music videos to posters flyer's and CD covers as you can see from the example above.

What i like about this CD cover is that it is highly recognisable as it contains the colours associated with white stripes. I like the simpleness of the cover from the simple black and white background to the simple photographs and text. It is not too in your face but still adventurous as a simple picture has been changed to create something much more eye catching and quirky by using different frames textures and forms etc.. My favourite aspects of this CD cover is the content with the people walking into the background it is the main focal point of the CD cover which gives indication that it must have a meaning . I also like how the writing is simple and small but still affective as it stands out from the background so that it is still visible to viewers.

The kings of Leon also have a good example of a CD cover , similar to the white stripes  cover it has a black and white colour theme  and small simple font. The difference between these two CD cover is that the kings of Leon is not as adventurous in there design. They use a simple skull image but in the form of an x-ray where as the white stripes have taken pictures and manipulated and changed them to create something exiting on a design programme such as adobe photoshop. The first CD cover looks like a lot more work has gone into it.
The aspects of this CD cover that i like is the layout , it is plain and simple but said all it needs to say , it also ties in with the genre of there music as skulls are associated with rock.  I also like the contrast between the fonts they have used , they use two different fonts ,two different colours and small and large text to highlight that the kings of Leon is their band name and because of the times is the name of their album. The album cover is not to over the top with cram packed pictures which would make it looked cluttered.

A trend that i have noticed is that most bands use clip art pictures such as this example above instead of using real pictures or photographs of them selves.I believe this is because it is easier for the bands to find a picture like this to portray the meaning of their album than it is with photographs. similar to the album cover above the green day cover also has no photographs or pictures of the band.It simply has a cartoon like picture used to portray an image. They also use dark colours and like the white stripes and many other bands they use red , black and white as their colour theme on this cover.
I like this album cover because of the layout and the font that they use however i do find it  plain and boring and similar to every other bands album cover that  i have seen. it also looks the norm with no character of its own. when creating my own CD cover i will be care full not to fall in the trap of using the same concept and colour theme that many bands use and create something a bit different.

This CD cover is my favourite compared to every other cover that i have spoken about. It is unusual and eye catching and unlike the norm it uses a photograph that has been combinded with another to create half a man and half a birds face instead of using the simple concept of clip art. when creating my own CD cover this is the route i want to go down. to create and eye catching CD cover that is different from every other.Another feature that i like about this CD cover is that they have used light colour instead of dark colours. They have taken a simple picture and changed the hue and saturation.

After researching other bands CD covers i then made some of my own using a certain process such as:

  • To visit Flickr's most interesting page, which selects a random picture which shows the most interesting photos discovered on the website within the last 7 days. I must then choose the 3rd image on the page and crop it to a square format
  • I  then had to generate a name for my band, I did this by using Wikipedias random page. I then used the first article that shows up.
  • Then to complete my CD cover, I needed a name for the album. I did this by looking a random quotations page. Using the last four words of the quote
  • I could then use my own fonts and layout to create the CD covers i could also manipulate the photos that i took of flickr.
